Foundation of Norway Football National Team

Football was introduced from England and quickly became a Norwegian hobby. Norway's first football club, the Christiania Footballclub, was founded in 1885. In the following years, many football clubs were formed, and in 1902, the Norwegian National Football Association was founded. A few years later, the Norwegian FA Cup was held. In 1908, at the invitation of the Swedish Football Association, a national team was formed.

    History From 1910s to 2022/2023

    1910s: First Match

Norway played their first international match on 12 July 1908 in Gothenburg against Sweden, who beat them 11-3. Two years later they played again against Sweden, who again won 4-0. On 7 October 1917, they were beaten 12-0 by Denmark, Norway's worst defeat ever.

    1920s: Defeat of Denmark

On 23 June 1929, Norway defeated Denmark 5-2, the first time Norway had ever beaten Denmark.

    1930s: Glorious Age

The 1936 Summer Olympics was Norway's best year, winning against Hungary, Australia and Turkey. In the second round, they defeated Germany 2-0, and although they lost to Italy in the semi-final, Norway beat Poland 3-2 in the third round to win the bronze medal.

Two years later Norway reached the World Cup finals for the first time. The 1938 World Cup was played in a direct elimination format, and they began the tournament against world champions Italy. As at the 1936 Summer Olympics, the race went into overtime and Italy won the second lap of the race, which they eventually won that year.

    1940s: Start again

In 1940, when Norway was invaded by Nazi Germany, all football activities ceased and many football players were sent to concentration camps. Although the footballers tried to stay in shape and participated in some unorthodox games, they did not continue to play football until after five years of independence. The first post-war match was against old rivals Sweden in Stockholm on 21 October 1945. After six years of occupation, the development of Norwegian football has been set back, because the opponents Sweden did not get involved in the war, so the strength of a lot of strength, they beat Norway 10-0 in this game, Norway's golden years are over.

    1950s: No surprises

Norway had a very poor record in the 1950s, with only a few wins over underdogs Finland and Iceland, and a shock win over Hungary in a World Cup qualifying match in 1957, only to be beaten 5-0 in the second leg by Hungary. 1960s: Good times and bad times Norway has recorded some spectacular victories, such as over Sweden and the Netherlands in 1962. In 1963, they were beaten 4-3 by Scotland and 9-0 by Poland.

    1970s: Calm down

During the 1970s, Norway experienced significant growth, and although they won important matches in their 1978 World Cup qualifying campaign, they lost their final match 1-0 to Switzerland and once again failed to qualify for the World Cup finals.

In 1972, Norway lost 9-0 to the Netherlands in a qualifying match for the 1974 World Cup. He suffered another humiliating defeat to Luxembourg in 1973. Norway did not qualify for the World Cup or the European Championship.

    1980s: More defeats than Wins

In the 1980s Norway occasionally scored some great feats, but none of them were good enough to qualify for major tournaments. For example, Norway won the 1982 World Cup qualifier against Switzerland, but lost to Hungary and Romania, and again failed to qualify for the 1982 World Cup finals. In 1984, Norway beat Yugoslavia 3-1 in the UEFA Euro 1984 qualifier, but only scored one point in the following match, and as a result, Norway did not participate in the final week of the UEFA Euro 1984.

    1990s: Flying again

After a 56-year absence from the World Cup, Norway finally qualified for the 1994 World Cup finals, along with Italy, Mexico and Ireland, and although the other three teams had four points, they were eliminated in the group stage due to the difference in goals conceded. Despite this, it was the best result for the Norwegian national team in decades, and although it did not qualify for the final of the 1996 European Cup of Nations, many of its stars played in the English Premier League, including Manchester United's Suskcha. Norway also improved its image by beating World champions Brazil 4-2 in 1997.
At the 1998 World Cup, the Norwegian national team also recorded its best result ever, winning the final match against Brazil 2-1, the second time Norway had beaten Brazil in two years.

    2000s: Standstill Era

After the World Cup, the Norwegian national team was coached by Semby. After taking office, Semby has always adopted a very conservative strategy, relying only on defense and not attacking, resulting in a low goal rate, and in the final week of the 2000 European Cup, because of only relying on defense, he once again went out in the first circle due to poor goals and losses in the group stage, repeating the mistake of the 1994 World Cup.

    2022/23 UEFA League of Nations

On October 16, in the eighth round of the European Championship qualifiers, Norway lost 0-1 to Spain and failed to qualify for the European Championship. On 19 November, Norway was confirmed to be out of Euro 2024.
